We’ve looked high and low - well, at least from Maine to Florida and one coast to the other - for resorts that are perfect for a couple’s vacation.
We wanted spots that have things like special touches in the rooms, great wine lists, and spaces that make you want to linger to do a little bit of nothing at all. The result? Seven romantic resorts that make for ultimate couples’ trips.
They’re all exceptionally unique. Some are boutique hotels while others are sprawling properties. One is a glamping spot in coastal Maine. Another is an expansive west coast estate perched high above the Pacific.
So, they each cater to a specific kind of traveling couple.
We experienced all of these firsthand (for research purposes of course). And we loved them so much that now we’re recommending them to you.
For Tropical, Laid-Back Couple Time: Cheeca Lodge And Spa
Located in Islamorada in the Florida Keys, this is the ultimate romantic escape. Oceanfront suites, private balconies, palm-lined pools, and lush grounds make for a couple’s vacation sweet spot.
The effortless vibe of the Florida Keys is perfectly embodied in the first place on our list.
But it comes with an upscale twist. So much so that it’s said to have invented the term “barefoot elegance”.
Cheeca Lodge and Spa is a 27-acre oceanfront luxury resort on Upper Matecumbe Key in Islamorada, Florida. Pretty much the gold standard in vacationing Keys-style, this place has been a tropical hideaway for decades. Presidents, stars, and discerning travelers have been frequenting here since 1946.
We could immediately see why when we walked on the grounds. The large stretch of private waterfront beach and tranquil water make it an ocean paradise. The winding paths, palm trees, and vibrant gardens give it a lush, tropical feel. The tiki torches and gorgeous sunset views over the Atlantic make it all the more romantic.
The Rooms:
A West Indies vibe is created in the 243 rooms featuring dark hardwood furniture, rattan furnishings, and screened-in balconies. Room categories include views of the ocean, island, golf course, or lagoon. Casitas allow for even more space should you need it. Some rooms even include butler service and private tubs on balcony.
Dining:
You have three spots to choose from. Fresh catch of the day can be found at Atlantic's Edge. Sushi is on the menu at Nikai. And wood-fired pizzas are the specialty at Mia Cucina.
Things to do:
Fishing is king in Islamorada, known as the Sportfishing Capital of the World. So guests can try their hand at reeling in the big one at the longest fishing pier in the Keys, located on property.
Or, take advantage of the on-site water sports for kayaking or paddleboarding.
Slip away to the adults-only pool or spend your time lounging on the 1,100-foot private beach.
Play a round on the 9-hole golf course or hit the tennis and pickleball courts.

For Fancy Dinners In A Legendary, Boutique Hotel: Inn At Little Washington
Tucked away in the Virginia countryside, this opulent hideaway feels like stepping straight into a romantic fairy tale. Escape here for a weekend by a roaring fireplace, sipping wine, and getting spoiled by their famous two-Michelin-starred tasting menu.
The next spot goes to a place that is a perfect combination of charm and opulence.
While it’s not in Washington, DC as the name might suggest, The Inn at Little Washington is just 90 minutes from the city. The fairytale-like boutique hotel that spans several buildings is in a tiny town in Virginia. It’s reminiscent of an English countryside with gardens, afternoon tea, resident animals, and world class service.
This is the type of place where with a little bit of luck, you might meet Sharron Proper, as we did. She’s the property’s shepherdess, who will lovingly tell you about her beloved chickens and the on-property farm.
Or you might catch the sight and sounds of Farmer Andy. He plays his soprano saxophone as he leads the resident geese on parade past the hotel on Middle Street.
And you are sure to be whisked to what seems like a bygone era as you explore the jewel tones, layered fabrics, and period antiques of the resort.
That’s because since its founding, chef turned hotelier Patrick O’Connell has been providing extraordinary stays and meals for guests. As it comes up on its 50th year in operation, “Chef” is he is affectionately known, continues to wow guests.
The Rooms:
Only 24 rooms, suites, and cottages are located throughout 7 historic buildings on site. All accommodations feature a Victorian-meets-early-American vibe with beautiful fabrics and custom wallpapers. Yet, all are completely unique and meticulously restored.
Dining:
When you visit a hotel founded by a chef who is known as the “Pope of American Cuisine”, you can bet your meals are going to be phenomenal. And believe us, they are. Be sure to enjoy one in the Michelin-starred Inn at Little Washington main dining room, as well as one in the more casual Patty O’s Cafe. And don’t skip breakfast in the mornings, often included with your stay.
Things To Do:
On property, stroll through the gardens and grounds on your own or take a guided tour. Enjoy afternoon tea, a picnic lunch packed by The Inn’s kitchen, or enjoy a cocktail or scotch tasting at the bar. Linger at the newly opened pool or peruse the tavern shops.
Off property, visit Virginia’s wine country. Hike in the foothills of the Shenandoah Mountains. Or day trip to Middleburg, Charlottesville, or Washington, DC.

Plopped in the Pennsylvania Laurel Highlands, Nemacolin Resort encompasses 3 distinct luxury hotels as well as separate homes. The best part though is the huge list of things to do. From gourmet dining to off-roading to spa-ing all day, there’s no shortage of reconnecting fun.
You’ve likely never heard of Farmington, Pennsylvania, where the next choice on our list is located.
But, you may have caught sight of its most famous piece of real estate if you watched the Bachelor a few years ago. That’s because this place is so romantic it was even chosen as the filming location for the popular dating show.
Located about 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh on a whopping 2,200 acres, Nemacolin mixes luxury with the rugged beauty of the Laurel Highlands. Whether you want to disconnect completely or keep busy with endless resort activities, this place has you covered.

Other options include: the 124-room reimagined, French-inspired Chateau; the 56-room all suite Grand Lodge; and private homes and estates for larger parties.
Dining Options:
Nemacolin offers 15+ distinct dining options. They range from Forbes Five-Star fine dining at Lautrec to casual spots. Notable options include Fawn & Fable, a traditional steakhouse, and Aqueous, a seafood-inspired. For more casual digs, don’t miss PJ’s Ice Cream Parlor and for craft cocktails, stop by the Circle Bar & The Study or Nightcap.
Things To Do:
Woodlands Spa at Nemacolin tops my list of things to do on a romantic getaway to the property. It quite literally is the spa my girlfriends can’t get me to stop talking about. The 32,000 square foot space is a true oasis.
For some adventure, guests can take the Jeep Off-Road Driving Academy course, try sporting clays, or go on a horseback ride. The sculpture-lined grounds also make for a perfect romantic stroll, with stops at the on-site zoo and the Auto & Aircraft Museum.
Beyond that, Nemacolin really shines with seasonal activities. During the Christmas season, their lights display is like nothing we’ve ever seen. Wintertime also provides access to snow tubing and dog sledding, while warmer weather means guests can lounge at one of seven pools.

For Unplugged Luxury: Under Canvas Acadia

For Stepping Back In Time In The South’s Most Romantic Town: Wentworth Mansion
Experience a Gilded-Age style getaway in Charleston, SC, where you can sip wine in the parlor and watch the sunset from the rooftop cupola. Horse drawn carriage rides, world-class cuisine, and charming Southern vibes will await you right outside their gates.

Things to Do:
While on property, spend time at the on-site spa for some pampering. Grab a glass of wine and take the winding staircase up to the rooftop cupola to watch the sunset over the city. Or take a vintage car tour lr book a Hinkley boat experience - both are offered by the hotel.
When you’re not on property, explore Charleston’s rich colonial history, antebellum architecture, fun shops and restaurants for even the pickiest of foodies.

For Pacific Northwest, Boutique Hotel Vibes: Willows Lodge And Spa
Steps from acclaimed wind estates and leisurely bike paths, this spot close to Seattle is perfect for ditching the car and enjoying a romantic weekend. Great wine, hidden gardens and acclaimed dining is a stone’s throw away.
If cozy, rustic-chic is more your vibe for a couple’s weekend, Willows Lodge is your ideal choice.
The boutique, 84-room resort is located in Woodinville, Washington. So it’s in the gorgeous wine country area just outside of Seattle.
The earthy tones and nods to bringing the outdoors in makes you feel like you are staying in a luxurious, hidden woodland cabin. The property is surrounded by beautiful, lush gardens and huge trees, feeling private and peaceful the second you step onto the grounds.
One of the best parts is the atmosphere in the evening thanks to outdoor firepits and dimly lit paths. The entire property feels like an invitation to slow down, relax, and just enjoy each other's company in the prettiest setting.
The Rooms:
You know you’re somewhere fun when the room categories are defined as "Nice," "Nicer," and "Nicest". Every room comes with a stone-trimmed gas fireplace, a private patio or balcony, and an oversized soaking tub. The "Nicer" rooms guarantees an enhanced view of the lodge's gardens or courtyards. The "Nicest" rooms are actually suites. They have separate living areas, dining spaces, deep soaking tubs, and even a TV built into the bathroom mirror.
Dining:
To really up your romance game, make a reservation at the independently owned Herbfarm, located right on the grounds. It provides an exclusive, nine-course themed dining experience paired with regional wines.
Willow Lodge’s flagship restaurant is Barking Frog. It serves award-winning, seasonal American cuisine and weekend brunch in a space with an open kitchen.
Or check out the Fireside Lounge, offering upscale comfort food, small plates, and live music alongside a massive stone fireplace.
Things to do:
Our very favorite thing to do during our stay was to use the complimentary bikes to explore Sammamish River Trail, directly beside the lodge. The 26-mile paved path is great for walking too. The scenic trail has stops to eat, wine tasting rooms, breweries, and parks to explore.
Even if you don’t opt to bike or hike your way to wineries, you might still want to check out a few. Chateau Ste. Michelle is one not be missed as it’s Washington’s oldest winery. Or if spirits are more your go-to, don’t miss Woodinville Whiskey. It’s just a stone’s throw from the lodge.

Ok, so here’s the thing. I love you, Los Angeles. But, you are very crowded.
Which is one of the many reasons the Resort at Pelican Hill is the ideal place for anyone in the L.A. area and well beyond hoping to escape the crowds.
This property is a sprawling 504 acres with everything designed on a grand scale. From massive marble fireplaces to vases as tall as I am, the space oozes Italian charm. In other words, think terracotta roofs, high wood-beamed ceilings, limestone fireplaces, and quiet courtyards.
The design is heavily inspired by Renaissance architecture, featuring olive trees, lavender, and stone pathways that frame views of the Pacific Ocean. It feels less like a typical Southern California hotel and more like a secluded Italian hillside village.
With a layout built around privacy, beauty, and European ambiance, what could be better for a couple’s trip?
The Rooms:
The resort consists of 128 villas and 204 bungalows. All have vaulted ceilings and a beautiful, neutral Tuscan-inspired color palette. The best part though are the prettiest, private furnished ocean-view or garden-view terraces I’ve ever seen.
Standard bungalows start around 800 to 850 square feet, functioning as large one-bedroom suites with vaulted ceilings. Larger bungalow suites span up to 1,639 square feet.
Dining:
Located at the on-site golf club, The Pelican Grill focuses on refined coastal California cuisine. The dining room showcases an open-concept kitchen, while the heated outdoor terrace offers panoramic Pacific views.
The slightly more casual Coliseum Grill has spectacular views of the resort's iconic pool, while The Great Room lounge shouldn’t be missed either.
Things To Do:
Once you see the resort’s perfectly circular, Roman inspired 136 foot wide pool, you’ll understand why it’s the centerpiece of the resort. It also happens to feature some of the best pool service we’ve ever experienced at a resort.
A shuttle provides free transportation to the beach as well as the use of beach bags, water, towels, and chairs.
All guests receive complimentary access to the spa as well as the driving range every day after noon.
If you want to head off property, consider exploring Crystal Cove State Park, the Newport Coast, or oceanfront dining at Laguna Beach.
