  1. Orlando, Fl

With so much to do in Orlando, this family travel destination always makes the list.

Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando top the must-do’s of course. In fact, you can easily spend a week at each and still just scratch the surface.

We’ve found they’re both great for short trips too thanks to easy flights and a huge range of close accommodations.

In fact, the resorts in Orlando are so great that we think they easily rival all-inclusive resorts that require a passport. So even if theme parks aren’t your mojo, Orlando is a tough choice to beat.

2. New York City

For the iconic city escape, head to none other than New York City.

We love making the Big Apple a weekend getaway a few times every year, especially now that our kids are teens. The city is surprisingly easy to navigate making us feel like we can accomplish a lot in a short period of time.

Our itinerary always includes:

3. Iceland

Iceland’s unique landscapes and culture make it a great family vacation destination every year.

An easy 5-hour flight from the east coast takes you to what seems like another world. The city of Reykjavik serves as a gateway to all the country has to offer. Some favorite family activities include:

  • hot springs swimming

  • exploring geothermal areas

  • waterfall hikes

  • black sand beaches

  • ice caves and glaciers

  • whale watching

  • riding Icelandic horses

Don’t forget to save a little time for exploring Reykjavik itself though. The Nordic capitol’s brightly painted houses provide a fairy-tale setting to explore modern architecture like Hallgrímskirkja church.

Our family’s favorite way to spend our time in Iceland was to tour the Golden Circle during the day. And then we would end the afternoon at a local “pool” or hot spring in that town. Each local spot has its own flair. It’s the perfect way to wrap up the day.

4. The Scottish Coast

Long before man made Scotland known for kilts, bagpipes, and castles, nature had its hand in creating the country’s truest claim to fame. The breathtaking landscape of Scotland includes rugged mountains, lakes (known as lochs), and deep valleys (known as glens).

And the country boasts thousands of miles of gorgeous coastlines.

The small town of Ballantrae was our pick to explore that coastline a few years ago. An accessible 2 1/2 hours from Edinburgh, it was the perfect family vacation destination - one of our family’s all time favorites. The highlight was a stay at Glenapp Castle, a truly special experience.

There’s a coastal experience for every kind of family visiting Scotland. The various settings offer charming Scottish culture, rugged beauty, historical sites, and quiet beaches. You’re sure to find a coast that’s ideal for your family too.

5. Seattle, Washington

Seattle itself has something to offer families. But, we think it’s really the small towns located oh-so-close to the city that are the true gems.

Seattle’s outskirts have tons of biking and hiking trails. They house family friendly breweries and wineries. And they boast landscapes that have to be seen to be fully appreciated.

Three of our favorite travel destinations near Seattle are:

  • Snoqualmie - 30 minutes from Seattle. Where you’ll find Salish Lodge and Spa, which sits literally on the edge of Snoqualmie Falls.

  • Woodinville - 40 minutes from Seattle. The serene Willows Lodge offers access to miles of biking trails, upscale dining and the cutest grounds you ever saw.

  • Cle Elum - An hour and 15 minutes from Seattle. The location of Suncadia, a family friendly resort boasting the amazing small town Washington vibes.

6. Costa Rica

Picture Costa Rica and you likely envision rainforests and beaches. While those things are certainly an important part of this Central American destination, there’s even more than you might think here.

On our Adventures By Disney Costa Rica trip, we found we loved the diversity of this vibrant country.

San José offers a city experience.

Places like Caño Negro and Arenal Volcano National Park provide an opportunity to see the local landscape and wildlife.

And towns like Guanacaste offer beach experiences.

The activities available are just as varied.

Adventurers can zip line, snorkel, and whitewater raft. Budding biologists can visit wildlife refuges, volcanic sights, and rainforests. Those seeking relaxation can soak in the area’s hot springs or visit one of the spas in the region.

7. Guatemala

We first visited Guatemala on a mission trip and it still remains a popular destination for such travel.

But Guatemala is a travel-worthy destination even when learning through giving back isn’t the primary goal of travel.

The UNESCO-listed city of Antigua has a downtown filled with local wares and Spanish Baroque architecture. The cobblestone streets make you feel like you stepped back in time. And it’s all set against volcano views.

Combine a trip to Antigua with a visit to Lake Atitlán, just over 2 1/2 hours away. With its sparkling blue waters, it’s often referred to as the most beautiful lake in the world. The Mayan influence makes it a trip rich in both beauty and culture.

8. Loire Valley, France

While Paris might be a bucket list destination for many, the smaller areas outside of any city are what we really think shine.

One such place is the Loire Valley, located just over 2 hours from Paris. With authentic French culture and a chance to stay in a castle, you’ll feel like you’re in a fairytale.

You’ll stroll along the streets of charming towns like Tours or Lavardin.

Some of our favorite fun things to do in the Loire Valley, France include:

  • Visiting chateaus like Chambord and Chenonceau

  • Taking a wine bike tour in Cheverny

  • Going on a Segway tour in Amboise

  • Sampling French food in the outdoor cafes in Tours

  • Hiking through the rolling hills of the countryside

9. The Florida Keys

Whatever your travel goals are, there’s likely a Florida Key to help you achieve it.

The 180-mile chain of coral islands begins just south of Miami. And it ends with Key West, the southernmost point in the continental U.S.

A total of over 800 small, low-lying islands comprise the Florida Keys. Many smaller keys aren’t developed or are part of state or national parks. Resorts and Airbnb’s are mostly located on the larger, more accessible keys.

You’ll find each key has its own character. But all have a laidback island vibe and welcoming seashores without towering hotels. The 5 main keys are:

  • Key Largo: Known for diving, this key is one of the most northern. It has family friendly resorts like Baker's Cay Resort Key Largo (our choice while there) and Playa Largo Resort & Spa, Autograph Collection.

  • Islamorada: A collection of islands that have great fishing spots.

  • Marathon: Provides access to both the upper and lower keys. Home to another one of our favorite resorts in the keys, Isla Bella Beach Resort.

  • Lower Keys: Known for unspoiled nature, abundant wildlife (especially the tiny Key Deer), and calm waters.

  • Key West: Lively spot with fun museums, a hopping nightlife and an airport.

10. Washington, D.C.

We love visiting D.C. It’s a beautiful, stately city thanks to the mandated low-rise architecture and wide, tree-lined streets.

This year is an especially special time to visit our nation’s capital because it’s the 250th birthday of our country. Throughout the year, special events, called America250 Celebrations, will take place to mark the occasion.

Even if you don’t come to town to attend an event, there’s plenty to do in DC to make it a fantastic family vacation destination.

Some of our favorite ways to spend a weekend in D.C. are:

PHOTO: The King’s Guards in London

11. London, England

Whether it’s your first jaunt across the pond or you’re a seasoned European traveler, London is a great vacation destination.

There’s so much culture packed into this city that it’s inherently an educational trip too. But the best part is the kids won’t even know they’re learning.

Iconic sights like Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London are too much fun to feel like school. And the museums (of which the Churchill War Rooms was one of our favorites) are as well.

Lots of parks and playgrounds in an easy navigable English-speaking city round out the top reasons for a visit.

12. Bar Harbor, Maine

The northeast United States has a special feel all its own, making it one of the best family vacation destinations.

And Bar Harbor ranks as one of our favorite places to celebrate all the area has to offer.

The cute-as-can-be town has loads of restaurants to eat fresh lobsters and plenty of places to shop.

Best of all it’s the gateway to Acadia National Park, which has stunning coastal landscapes, forests, and mountains. In addition to 27 miles of paved road, it has 45 miles of crushed stone hiking and biking paths.

We loved our last trip to the area, especially because of our stay at Under Canvas Acadia. It’s glamping at its best.

13. Edinburgh, Scotland

While it’s true that we think much of Europe’s charm can be found in its smaller towns, there are a few exceptions to the rule.

Edinburgh is one of them.

The super walkable city manages to somehow still feel authentic yet Instagram-worthy at the same time.

The Royal Mile covers a large percentage of the top things to do in, you guessed it, about a mile. The path is actually several connecting streets and alleyways perfect for exploring.

Seeing the city by combining wandering on your own with a few short tours was how we loved visiting there.

If you’re looking for more about how to spend your time in the city, check out our 3-Day Edinburgh itinerary HERE.

14. St. John, USVI

For some no-passport-needed fun in the sun, head to St. John.

The smallest of the three main U.S. Virgin Islands covers about 20 square miles, with 2/3 of its land protected as Virgin Islands National Park

The easiest way to get there is to fly to St. Thomas and then ferry to St. John.

Rent a jeep once you’re on island to explore various beaches like Trunk Bay, Cinnamon Bay and Maho Bay. Each has something unique to offer like underwater trails (Cinnamon), snorkeling (Cinnamon), or sea turtles (Maho).

One of the best ways to experience St. John, and even the nearby British Virgin Islands, is via a catamaran. A multi-day sailboat rental for your St. John vacation allows you to cruise from spot to spot. Your captain and first mate also serve as your chef on board for a true leave-the-cooking-behind getaway.

PHOTO: ATV Riding near Joshua Tree National Park outside of Palm Desert

15. Palm Springs, California

Palm Springs was the location we visited last year that most pleasantly surprised us. So it made the list this year for the best family travel destinations.

Although we had been there on an adults-only trip, we somehow weren’t quite aware of the massive draw it has for families too.

The quirky-in-the-best-way town is fun to explore.

And the desert provides an awesome playground for activities like hiking and 4-wheeling.

Truthfully though, our kids would have been happy never leaving the resort. Palm Springs may have been created for Hollywood’s elite to get away. But, more modern accommodations were clearly built with families in mind.

5 of our top picks are:

PHOTO: Begur Castle in Costa Brava, in the Catalonia region of Spain

16. Costa Brava, Spain

Barcelona isn’t just a travel-worthy city in its own right. It’s also the gateway to the Catalonia region of Spain and the Costa Brava area. Towns like Begur, Calella de Palafrugell, Tessa de Mar and Girona are under 2 hours away from Barcelona.

The region has beautiful beaches and medieval history all tied into one. Families can explore Gothic castles one day and lounge on the beach the next.

The Catalan culture is well preserved here creating a trip rich in great food, friendly people, and a small-town feel. It’s also a less crowded experience than some of the beaches on the southern coast of Spain.

For a truly passport-worthy boutique experience check out 2 of our favorite hotels:

  • Hostel de la Gavina: A historic 5-star grand luxe hotel in S’Agaro with a stunning bougainvillea lined path to the beach.

  • Hotel Can Mascort: An eco-friendly hotel in the town of Palafrugell that has been meticulously restored. The owner herself will ensure you have a personalized stay in one of the 15 rooms.

PHOTO: Fly fishing in Crooked River outside of Bend

17. Bend, Oregon

The city of Bend describes itself as a place that’s “big enough to have great restaurants. Small enough that everyone is friendly.”

We would say that pretty much sums it up.

Perfectly-sized Bend also has year-round outdoor recreation opportunities in a unique high desert setting.

The Cascade Mountain provides the backdrop to an Oregon get-away. Adventurers can also raft or fish Deschutes River and hike Smith Rock.

Foodies and craft beer fans will be happy in Bend too. Many breweries are family friendly and some are reachable by bike.

PHOTO: Making friends and learning the culture in Jamaica while renting a staffed home

18. Jamaica

We’ve found that the people we meet are the best part of any family vacation.

No where is that more true than in Jamaica.

The birthplace of reggae is also home to a culture of hospitality that runs deep.

The mountainous island happens to have gorgeous turquoise waters, stunning beaches and delicious cuisine as well.

After a category 5 hurricane hit in 2025, many wondered when Jamaica would be able to welcome tourists again.

Given the resilience of the Jamaican people, it’s no surprise travel to the island opened quickly. By many accounts, tourism has returned in Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa.

All-inclusive resorts like Grand Palladium Jamaica Resort and Spa and Beaches Negril have long been hosting guests. They’re ready to continue doing that on massive properties with numerous restaurants, miles of beach, and a slew of activities.

A different way to experience the island is renting a home that includes a staff. We found this to be one of the most luxurious vacations we’ve had. It was a fantastic way to enjoy authentic food and get to know our Jamaican hosts.

19. Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville is famous for its stunning Blue Ridge Mountain setting and access to the Biltmore Estate, the largest privately owned home in the U.S.

And the chance to enjoy both makes it a great family vacation destination.

Touring the massive Biltmore Estate allows you to delve into the history of the area. Hiking the mountain trails helps you appreciate the natural setting.

Asheville’s River Arts District and eclectic downtown are fun too. And a variety of accommodations mean you can do your Asheville vacation just the way you like it.

20. The Bahamas

So many Caribbean islands could make the list of go-to spots. But one classic might have more to offer than you think.

We love the Bahamas for a family vacation destination. So much so that we’ve already booked our trip to one of the smaller islands for this year. We like its location because Nassau, the country’s hub, can be accessed via nonstop flights from numerous cities. So it has that year-round warm weather and breathtakingly beautiful water in an easy-access locale.

And that water provides all the things you go to the Caribbean for - like snorkeling, diving, sailing, and relaxation.

We also appreciate the diversity. Big resort vibes can be found at places like Atlantis and Baja Mar. Luxury boutique stays happen at places like The Cove Eleuthera, a Michelin Key, Relais & Chateau Resort.

PHOTO: White water rafting in West Virginia

21. West Virginia

Putting a whole state on the list might seem a little unfair. But, as a West Virginia native, I couldn’t limit myself to just one spot here.

West Virginia has a mountain escape for every type of traveler. Families like us who have a particular soft spot for historic luxury resorts will love The Greenbrier. You won’t want to leave the resort during a stay there. But you should to check out Lewisburg, a wonderfully charming town nearby.

National park enthusiasts can visit the newest national park, New River Gorge National Park and Reserve. It hosts a variety of activities, including whitewater rafting, hiking and even Bridge Day, a BASE jumping festival.

Or families can head to my neck of the woods, the eastern panhandle of the state. At just an hour and half from Washington, D.C., we have charming towns like Harper’s Ferry and Shepherdstown.

That’s just a small portion of places worth visiting in the mountain state. For more ideas, read our guide to 50 of the best places to go in West Virginia HERE.

PHOTO: Skiing in Deer Valley

22. Deer Valley, Utah

We love trying out different ski resorts but one location has us dreaming of going back.

Deer Valley does family pampering like few others. From ski valets to boot fitting done right at your resort, the staff makes hitting the slopes practically effortless. An easy 45-minute drive from the Salt Lake International Airport sure doesn’t hurt either.

It’s a great time to visit thanks to the opening of new chairlifts. A 6-passenger lift features heated, bubble chairs while a 10-person one offers express service.

Deer Valley also has fantastic dining options and a plethora of upscale hotels. There’s even access to other slopes in Park City, which is especially helpful since Deer Valley doesn’t permit snow boarders.

Not a cold weather fan? Deer Valley is a great destination in warmer weather too thanks to hiking trails, ponds, and scenic chair rides.

23. Grand Canyon National Park

With an immense scale and profound geologic history, the Grand Canyon is a not-to-be-missed family vacation destination.

The open-year-round South Rim is often the best choice for family friendly hikes. Here kids can participate in the Junior Ranger program and families can tour interesting museums. The South Rim also features the Desert View Watchtower, visitor centers, and bike trails.

Another great way to see the canyon is to ride the Grand Canyon Railway from the town of Williams or raft near Horseshoe Bend.

Visiting the Hualapai Ranch, located at Grand Canyon West, provides tribal fun for families. And exploring the nearby Tusayan Pueblo Site and Self-Guided Trail sneaks in fascinating learning about the history of the area.

24. Lancaster, Pennsylvania

I had a hard time deciding whether to put Lancaster, PA or Hershey, PA on our list of best family vacation destinations.

But, the good news is you don’t really have to make a choice. Because at about 1/2 hour apart, the best option is exploring both in one trip.

In Lancaster, our top choices of things to do are:

  • Visit Amish Country

  • Explore the historic town

  • Shop at the various outlets

  • Dine at authentic Pennsylvania Dutch restaurants

  • Visit Site and Sound Theater for the latest showing of a Bible-based production

At Hershey:

PHOTO: St. Augustine provides iconic beach experiences.

25. St. Augustine, Florida

St. Augustine is the trifecta of family travel. It offers an inviting beach, a charming town, and a ton of history.

The beach has a wide, sandy shoreline, fishing pier, splash park, volleyball courts, and access to restaurants.

Historic downtown St. Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the U.S. You’ll find cobblestone streets, the Lightener Museum, Spanish colonial architecture, and other landmarks. We love St. George Street, which is only open to pedestrians, and the trolly tours offered throughout the area.

The Fountain of Youth Archeological Park is just a short distance from downtown and another fun stop. The 15-acre park has lots to see. And yes - you can even test your luck at preserving your youth by drinking from the fountain.
