7 Of The Best European Family Vacations: From Cities To Small Town Gems
Planning a trip to Europe with kids or teens? These 7 family-friendly European vacation destinations are our family’s favorites for combining culture and fun.
Exploring Europe with your family can be a bucket-list experience.
But it can be a little intimidating. Between the thought of long-haul flights and so much to see and do, planning can be overwhelming.
Never fear, travel mamas. We’ve got you covered. Our own family has found what we think is the secret sauce to seeing Europe.
First, we fly into a major airport. Picking an airport that has nonstop flight options to and from the U.S. makes for an easy entry into a different country.
We spend a few days exploring that city. Europe’s large cities have so many architectural and historical sites to see.
We then travel to a nearby (often within just a couple of hours), smaller region. We’ve found that’s where the culture of a country really shines.
Yes, each of the countries we’ve visited has travel-worthy places to see farther from our originating airport. But we’ve never felt we’ve missed out by staying closer. We’ve been amazed to experience what traveling just a few hours from the metropolitan area can do. And we’ve felt less overwhelmed by long travel days in the middle of our trip.
We’ve got 7 itineraries that combine a big European city with suggestions for a smaller town that is close by. They all make for a European vacation your family is sure to love too.

London, England
London ranks first on our list thanks to convenience, culture, and lots to do.
For starters, there are more flights to London from U.S. airports than to any other city in Europe.
There’s also no language barrier.
Green spaces, iconic sites, and world-class museums even led to Business Insider naming London the best city for kids.
5 Things To Do In London:
Visit must-see spots like the Tower of London, Westminster Abby, and St. James Park.
Tour Buckingham Palace.
Go to high tea at Kensington Palace Gardens or do a unique afternoon tea bus tour.
Visit Hampton Court Palace. If you have young kids, don’t miss my own kiddos’ favorite - the Magic Garden playground and historic maze.
Celebrate Sundays like the British with a Market Tour or a roast at a restaurant like The Engineer or Jones & Sons.
Where to Spend A Few Days Outside Of London:
The Cotswolds: Picturesque stone cottages surrounded by charming villages located an hour or 2 from London. Burton-on-the-Water and Bilbury are the most well-known, while places like Snowshill are a bit more off-the-beaten-path.
Bath: Explore Royal Victoria Park, the ancient Roman baths, and tour the city. It’s all about 2 and a half hours from London.
York: Themed walks, chocolate, and medieval history keep the whole family entertained in this spot that’s about 4 hours from London.

2. Paris, France
The elegant city of Paris is a fantastic European getaway for all kinds of travelers.
It seems this timeless city has always been at the top of travelers’ bucket lists. It’s been called the City of Love and the Capital of Fashion, making it a romantic and splurge-worthy spot for couples and singles.
But, it’s also wonderful for a kids-in-tow vacation.
The city is arranged like the spokes of a wheel with a different arrondissement in each spoke. So, it’s relatively easy to get around. Families can catch Eiffel Tower views, explore parks and playgrounds, cruise the Seine, check out museums, and so much more.
5 Things to do in Paris:
Visit charming parks and playgrounds, like Jardin de Luxembourg and Jardin d’Acclimatation. Or go to Disneyland Paris. Visiting the only Disney park in Europe is a great break for kids and particularly special if you’re already Disney fans (like us!)
Take a Paris Food Tour. Ours kept bellies full while we learned so much about the city.
Explore Paris by Segway. Our older kids loved hopping in these easy-to-use vehicles to see the best of the city. (And by “older kids”, I mean my husband and me too!)
See the Mona Lisa with your own eyes on a Louvre Tour.
Take a dinner cruise on the Seine. You’ll get bonus points from your family if you book at night to see the Eiffel Tower lit up.
Where To Visit Near Paris:
Loire Valley: Our pick for where to go near Paris, at about 2 and ½ hours from the city. We loved staying at the beautiful Les Hauts de Loire Hotel for a multi-day trip. You can also day-trip to the Loire Valley and tour Chambord and Chenonceau, see the house of Leonardo da Vinci, and explore small, charming towns.
Giverny: At just 1 hour from Paris, this fairy-tale spot was the home of Monet. If you don’t choose to overnight there, book a Monet Gardens & Giverny bike tour with a picnic to keep the kids active while seeing the area.
Normandy: History buffs will appreciate visiting the D-Day beaches of this area, which is about 3 hours from Paris. The lush, rolling French countryside makes this a great place to learn, unwind, and explore.

3. Edinburgh, Scotland
Our family agreed, finding Edinburgh to be such a fantastic city to explore. It’s jam-packed with its own unique culture. And the fact that it’s English-speaking and compact makes it so convenient.
The Old and New Towns are located within a 2-3 mile radius and separated by Princess Street. We spent most of our time in Old Town with its medieval draw. Our kids loved walking the cobblestone streets and climbing the hill to the Royal Mile. But we also loved the Georgian elegance of New Town.
5 things to do in Edinburgh:
Take a guided walking tour of Edinburgh Castle, which has served as a residence for kings and queens, a military garrison, prison and fortress.
Stroll the Princess Street Gardens and see things like the Scott Memorial.
Take the Potter Trail private tour to trace the steps of the boy wizard.
See the city’s Underground Vaults on a walking tour.
Sweeten the day with a chocolate-making experience.
Where To Go Outside Of Edinburgh:
The Scottish Coast: While the Highlands may be a more popular choice, the coast was our favorite. The highlight was staying at Glenapp Castle, overlooking the Irish Sea and Ailsa Craig Island. It’s located 2 and ½ hours from Edinburgh.
Glencoe: Featuring waterfalls, lochs, and mountain ridges, this town is considered the scenic gateway to the famous Scottish highlands. It’s just under 3 hours from Edinburgh, but can be toured on a Loch Ness, Glencoe and Highlands day tour as well.
Stirling: Located 1 hour from Edinburgh, it features a hilltop castle and the Wallace Monument.

Sirolo: Beaches are the perfect places to make family vacation memories. Do it Italian style at this less crowded gem, just 3 hours from Rome, in the Marche region.
Umbria: At about 2 hours from Rome, this area is relaxed and authentically Italian. Think boating on Lake Trasimeno, making chocolate, and exploring castles, all while avoiding more touristy spots.

Costa Brava: At about 2 hours away, this was our choice for where to go near Barcelona on a recent trip. We enjoyed the friendly people, Spanish flair, and resort amenities. The stunning beaches and coves, and exceptional food, combined to make an ideal experience.
Begur: We also loved this medieval town that’s just an hour and a half from Barcelona. Narrow, cobblestone alleys lead visitors through the town, filled with rich history and culture. Don’t miss the climb to Begur Castle’s ruins for a beautiful view of the coast.

Traveling just a short distance from Reykjavik rewards travelers with Iceland’s fascinating landscapes. (Photo credit: Candi Hurst)
6. Reykjavík, Iceland
Being separated from mainland Europe makes Iceland a bit of an out-of-the-box choice. But we promise Iceland’s dramatic landscapes make the Land of Fire and Ice worth it.
The otherworldly feeling that Iceland evokes begins almost as soon as you arrive in the country’s capital of Reykjavík. It’s the perfect place to start your journey in this fascinating country. The cozy vibe of the small-ish city, museums, and welcoming atmosphere make it a great family destination.
One of our favorite things about Iceland though, is how much of a difference it makes to get even just a short distance from the city. The country’s waterfalls, geothermal baths, volcanic fields and wildlife await practically around the corner.
5 Things To Do In Reykjavík:
Bath in the waters of the Blue Lagoon. Located under 25 minutes from the airport, this is a perfect first or last day activity in an amazing setting. The geothermal spa located in a volcanic lava field has milky-blue, mineral-rich seawater situated in a volcanic lava field.
Stroll through the Old Harbour. Visitors can walk around the docks, see working fishing boats, and go to the Reykjavik Maritime Museum.
Visit the Hallgrímskirkja church. The iconic and unique structure is one of the most recognizable buildings in Iceland.
Explore Rainbow Road (Skólavörðustígur). Colorful shops and cafes dot the road leading up to the church.
Go on a whale watching tour. Spot minke whales, humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins, harbour porpoises, and even the occasional orca.
What Small Towns To Stay In Near Reykjavík:
Selfoss: The largest town in South Iceland, located an hour from Reykjavik, is a great base for exploring the Golden Circle and South Coast waterfalls. Its charming downtown and large geothermal swimming pool was one of the highlights of our trip. Access to AirBnB style lodging in rural settings makes it a perfect spot for families too.
Thingvellir/Nesjavellir: Various lodging options and a convenient location make this an ideal spot for Golden Circle access as well. The serene landscape also provides access to hiking trails with views of lava fields, mountains, and Lake Þingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland. And it’s also just an hour from Reykjavik.
Hella: At about an hour and half from Reykjavik, this town houses Hotel Ranga. It’s one of the most well known places to stay to see the Northern Lights. The rustic hotel features a volcano in one direction and the sea in the other, meaning daytime views rival those of the night.

It’s known for being clean and safe, as well as easy to get around thanks to an organized public transportation system.
Even the famous beer gardens are perfect for adults-only or kids-in-tow trips. The spaces are often open air and allow visitors of all ages.
Combine that with Munich’s vibrant culture, a beautiful setting, and easy day trips from the city for an epic family vacation.
